Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Paro – Into the Valley of the Thunder Dragon

Your journey begins as your flight descends between snow-capped peaks, revealing emerald-green valleys dotted with traditional farmhouses. Welcome to Paro—the spiritual gateway to Bhutan.

Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with a traditional white khadar scarf and the warm hospitality of your Bhutanese guide. After settling in, your exploration begins:

  • Visit Rinpung Dzong, a 17th-century fortress that once defended against Tibetan invaders. Walk its creaking wooden bridge, admire the hand-painted murals, and listen to stories that echo through its stone walls.
  • Climb to Ta Dzong, now Bhutan’s National Museum, where ancient thangkas, weapons, and Himalayan artifacts offer insight into Bhutan’s sacred history.

Evening at leisure in Paro town. Rest early—the mountains await.

Overnight: Hotel in Paro | Altitude: 2,280 m

Day 2: Paro (Jele Dzong) to Jangchulakha – The Forest Awakens

Your trekking adventure begins with a gentle climb through pine, fir, and rhododendron forests. The scent of juniper mingles with the fresh mountain air as you ascend to Jele Dzong, perched dramatically on a ridge.

  • Jele Dzong (3,490 m): This small 15th-century monastery often shrouded in clouds, offers panoramic views of the Paro Valley below. If the weather permits, you’ll glimpse Mount Jomolhari in the distance.

From here, continue through yak pastures and quiet alpine meadows until you reach the campsite at Jangchulakha, where herders graze their animals in summer.

Overnight: Tented Camp | Trek Duration: 5 hrs | Altitude: 3,770 m

Day 3: Jangchulakha to Jimilangtsho – Into the Misty Mountains

Today’s trek takes you deeper into the mountains. The trail climbs along a high ridge with spellbinding views of snow-capped peaks on clear days. You’ll likely hear yak bells long before you see them, as they graze in the wild pastures.

Your path leads to the serene Jimilangtsho Lake, nestled in a hidden valley at 3,880 m. Its still waters reflect the skies above and are believed to be inhabited by protective lake spirits. In spring and summer, wildflowers bloom in bursts of color, while Himalayan monals and pheasants occasionally cross your trail.

Settle into your lakeside campsite under the stars.

Overnight: Tented Camp | Trek Duration: 6 hrs | Altitude: 3,880 m

Day 4: Jimilangtsho to Simkota – Lakes and Skyward Trails

Start your morning with hot tea and breathtaking stillness. Today’s trail continues past several beautiful high-altitude lakes—Janye Tsho and Simkota Tsho—with water so clear it mirrors the heavens.

The journey is a meditative one: silence, wind, and your own heartbeat. As you ascend to over 4,000 m, the trail opens up to dramatic views of Bhutan’s highest peaks. On clear days, you’ll see the majestic Gangkar Puensum, the world’s highest unclimbed mountain.

Camp tonight near Simkota Lake, where yak herders sometimes gather and the stars feel just an arm’s length away.

Overnight: Tented Camp | Trek Duration: 6 hrs | Altitude: 4,110 m

Day 5: Simkota to Phajoding, then Descent to Thimphu – Return to Civilization

Your final trekking day begins with a gentle climb to Laban La Pass (4,210 m)—the highest point of the trek. From here, enjoy sweeping views of the Thimphu Valley far below.

As you descend, the environment changes dramatically—from alpine scrub to lush forests of fir, blue pine, and rhododendron. You’ll stop at Phajoding Monastery (3,600 m), one of Bhutan’s most sacred meditation sites. Overlooking Thimphu, this peaceful retreat is home to meditating monks who have taken vows of silence.

A final forest trail brings you into the outskirts of Thimphu, where your driver will be waiting. After days of isolation, the capital’s quiet hum will feel like a gentle return.

Overnight: Hotel in Thimphu | Trek Duration: 6–7 hrs

Day 6: Departure from Paro – Farewell to the Land of Happiness

After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport. As you fly past the ridges and peaks you walked just days before, take one last look at the land that opened its skies and soul to you.
